A picture diary from a day at the Tea House on Los Rios.
It has been a long time since I have written a post on here as life has gotten pretty chaotic, in the best way possible. I still love journaling down all my thoughts and emotions and this topic is always something that is constantly on the forefront of my brain so here goes nothing….
I could write novels on this subject and honestly could list a million different reasons as to why I am going to school to be a teacher. This is something that I am so passionate about and honestly have always dreamt of doing since I was a little girl. No one decides to be a teacher based on the money they decide to be a teacher based on the sheer possibility of potentially changing children’s lives. I am a third year in college and I cannot count the amount of times someone has questioned why I wanted to be a teacher, “it’s terrible pay”, “how are you going to support yourself doing that”, “why would you choose to be a teacher when you could do something that’ll get you further in life”, and unfortunately the list goes on and on. For me life clearly isn’t all about making as much money as I can, it’s about truly enjoying my future career.
Studying child and family development these past 3 years while at college has really taught me so much about child psychology, family dynamics, family relationships, developmental milestones from infancy through old age, and so much more. I’ve been given so many opportunities to do hands on work with children and teachers experiencing first hand how much caregivers influence the lives of children. The truth of the matter is children these days will be growing up in a very different world than how things used to be. Now, more than ever, children need love, support, and guidance throughout their whole lives. Having a future career in teaching gives me that possibility to provide those things to children who may thrive on that need for positive attention.
Learning has and always will be one of my passions, I have loved my time at college specifically as of lately because I am getting to really dive deeper into how I can become both an effective and influential teacher. We’ve all had those teachers at some point in our life where you can just tell they don’t want to be there anymore than you do. Honestly, in my opinion, if anyone hates their job that much I don’t really understand why people stick around in careers that aren’t fulfilling them. Everyone has their own passions in life and I am just one college student chasing her dream to impact children in the best way that I can. I am so excited for that avenue of my life and meanwhile I am trying to soak in all the information and experience possible so that I can one day be the best teacher, and eventually mother, that I can be.
Sometimes life can get really overwhelming. I can almost guarantee that at some point in your life you have been overwhelmed by something that has been thrown your way. I sure know that I have, in fact probably at least once a day I get overwhelmed by something that has happened. I’m hoping that’s normal for most people (it’s probably not) but hey that’s just part of who I am. Over the many years, 21 to be exact, that I have been alive I have perfected my ultimate de-stress/girly/spa/nighttime/night in routine. This is my simple way of de-stressing and enjoying a night in.
My favorite way to unwind is to take a bath. I don’t know what it is about the atmosphere that a bath gives but I instantly relax and have a chance to de-stress. Recently I found some products that I love to use during a night in. The Tree Hut Shea Moisturizing Epsom Salt in the scent Tropical Mango is probably my all time favorite out of the bunch. Ever since I was about 12 I have been putting Epsom Salts in my bath for lots of different reasons but if you are curious about the benefits of adding them just google it and you will find lots of resources! These ones from Tree Hut smell SO amazing that I had to buy the matching Body Wash (which I also use as bubble bath) and Sugar Scrub to enhance my nighttime bath routine. They have tons of different scents this was just my favorite out of the options I had when I was out and about shopping. The final touch to my relaxing bath time is to add a candle of choice and throw on a sheet mask and/or hair mask. The candle pictured above was a gift from a sweet friend of mine and the scent was tropical so I found it appropriate considering all the other tropical scents I had going on. That’s it! That is my go-to routine for when life gets kind of crazy, it’s the perfect way to unwind and also pamper yourself at the same time.
Summer has come and is slowly going within the blink of an eye. I have been so busy with work and spending time with those I love that I have neglected to post on here as often as I would have liked. I still have a bunch of blog post ideas coming in the near future so be sure to check back every so often so you don’t miss them! I head back to school in just a little over 4 weeks and it is so crazy to think that I am going to be a junior in college. The time has flown by but the one thing I will NOT miss is the stress that comes with planning classes for the next semester. Being at such a big college there are lots of different classes and a lot of students to fill those classes so the registration process quickly becomes one of the most dreadful processes. Speaking from past and current experience it’s like the ultimate game of chance with constant rearranging/reorganizing until finally the time comes to add the classes as fast as humanly possible before they get filled. That has been my current life mixed in with work during the day. When they tell you that life goes by so quickly once you’re in college they really aren’t kidding, it seems like just yesterday I was graduating from high school and getting prepared to go off to college for the first time. I am so grateful and blessed for the life that I live and am just trying to take in everyday as it comes. So here’s just a little life update explaining why I haven’t been posting as often as I would like but thanks for being along for the journey!
Today I spent the day in Los Angeles, California with my best friend, who also happens to be my boyfriend, Dylan. We decided to have a fun day exploring the Farmer’s Market and walking around The Grove Shopping Center. Our first stop was the Farmer’s Market where we spent a solid 30 minutes just walking around and looking at all the different vendors & food. The fruit looked absolutely delicious and I couldn’t help but take pictures of all the yummy treats I encountered through our wandering. I finally decided on a place called the French Crepe Co. where I ordered a savory breakfast crepe which had egg, cheese, tomato, and bacon. This crepe was so amazing and if you’re in the mood for a sweeter crepe they had plenty of delicious options as well.
Wandering into the grove we found the cutest little vendor selling all sorts of beautiful succulents. I just about wanted every single one of them but somehow withheld my urge to buy the entire cart. Before heading home we drove about 30 minutes to this place called Churro Borough where we stopped for some dessert. Churro ice cream sandwiches are just about as good as you would imagine they would be, delicious.
During the summer I hardly ever bother with a lot of makeup because there really isn’t any point. Mostly everyday is filled with some type of outdoor activity either in the sun/heat or in the ocean/pool. My go-to summer makeup is very simple and takes less than 5 minutes. This routine is also something that I do for those “no makeup” makeup days where you just want a little something to make you look awake without getting carried away. These are some of my favorite makeup products for not only the summer but year round as well.
Step 1: After applying face sunscreen my first step is to lightly apply some of my BareMinerals Original Foundation SPF 15 with a fluffy powder brush. I have the shade “golden medium” and this is my perfect shade for the summer since I usually have a bit of a tan going on. This provides a light dusting of coverage while at the same time adding SPF to protect your face from the sun. I find this to be perfect for summer as it not only evens out my skin tone but it also is very light on the skin making it very breathable.
Step 2: Next I go for the Benetint by Benefit and apply this to both my lips and my cheeks. I dab a little bit of the liquid onto one of my cheeks and then rub it in before moving onto the next cheek because since this is a stain you have to blend it in quick before it dries. After applying it to both my lips and cheeks it provides such a natural looking flush to the skin and it stays all day long.
Step 3: Next I move onto the brows and I use my Anastasia Beverly Hills Eye Brow Powder in the color taupe and I apply this to both of my eyebrows using a light hand with an angled eyeshadow brush.
Step 4&5: Finally moving onto the eyes I use two products. The first is the Revlon Colorstay Creme Eyeshadow in the color Cherry Blossom 745. I simply apply this creme shadow with my finger all over my eyelid and it’s as easy as that. This shadow will stay all day long, like seriously all day, even after you take off your makeup some will still be there. Then to top off the whole look I apply my favorite mascara the Benefit They’re Real Mascara. This mascara lengthens and provides volume at the same time you just have to apply a couple coats to achieve that dramatic lash effect. They have a water proof version of this mascara but I find that the normal formula is already hard to remove so I have no problem with it coming off throughout the day.
Summer is among us and that means it’s time to break out the good stuff. No summer is complete without a bag full of skin & hair essentials to take with you to the beach or pool. These products are a combination of new and old finds that I think are essential to both your skin & hair’s summer needs.
I don’t know about you but I love summer because it finally means a chance to relax in the sun and even hopefully get that sun kissed tan skin that always makes you feel more confident. However, laying in the sun for hours on end with no SPF can be very damaging to your skin, while it may not show right away, not wearing SPF can cause lots of health/skin issues down the road. I have two sets of my favorite types of sunscreen to protect my skin, the first is the Neutrogena Beach Defense Sunscreen SPF 70 which is easy for reapplying at the beach/pool since it is spray form and is usually my go-to for reapplying. Before I even get to the beach/pool while I am getting ready I apply the Hawaiian Tropics Silk Hydration Weightless SPF 30 & Oil Free Face Sunscreen to my body and face. This stuff is probably my favorite sunscreen ever because it not only smells amazing but it also feels amazing. It melts into the skin and literally makes your skin so silky smooth that you won’t even be able to tell it’s sunscreen.
Like I mentioned earlier tan skin is always something that just goes hand-in-hand with summertime. I love the feeling of being tan but have recently realized that there are ways to achieve that without baking in the sun with no SPF. One of my favorite products for the beach is the Maui Babe Browning Lotion. This product has NO SPF so it is very important to layer it with an SPF of some sorts in order to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays. If you can get past the odd, almost barbecue like smell, then this product will change your life. The lotion itself is brown so even while tanning you already sort of have that bronze look to your skin. If you’re looking for an all in one type of product the Sun Bum Tanning Oil SPF 15 is that product. It is a tanning oil so keep that in mind and maybe save this one for the pool unless you want to be a sandy-oily mess at the beach. It has an SPF of 15 and it smells like coconuts. A sun-less option also by Sun Bum are their Self-Tanning Towelettes which are basically just towelettes with self-tanner on them and you can apply it all over your face or body to achieve that tan look without the sun!
After sun skincare is equally as important as protecting your skin from the sun. After returning from a day in the sun my skin usually feels dry and sometimes even a little sunburnt depending on how well I reapplied that day. I have two products that in essence do the same thing but I equally love both. The first is the Sun Bum Cool Down Spray and this product is a spray oil/lotion that you can apply to your skin after the sun in order to calm and heal your dry and irritated skin. It smells like cucumber and contains aloe which will help restore any sunburnt skin. The other product is the Hawaiian Tropics Silk Hydration After Sun and this is more of a gel-like consistency and smells tropical. This one is ideal to put on before bed and just like the sunscreen it melts right into the skin leaving your skin silky smooth to the touch.
Some of my favorite hair products to take with me to the beach are sea-salt sprays like the Ouai Wave Spray or the Not Your Mother’s Beach Babe Spray. Whenever I get out of the water I will spray a bunch of this in my hair and scrunch it up in order to get those soft beach waves. If I am not in the mood for a messy beach look then I will spray the Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla Leave-in Conditioner all throughout my hair and brush it out with my Tangle Teezer Hairbrush and just let it air dry like normal.
My skincare routine has remained pretty much the same for at least 4 years now. Trying new products is always something that I love doing but once you find that staple routine that works for your skin, stick to it, because then you will begin to see results just like I have. These are some of my favorite products for skincare that are fairly natural and require little effort. The simpler the better in my opinion because then it makes it easy to stay consistent.
My holy grail, cannot live without, favorite face wash is the Purity face wash from Philosophy. This is the first step in my skincare routine and the only face wash I really use besides an occasional scrub every so often. This product is a makeup remover and face wash in one so it’s very simple and makes my life so much easier. One of my best recommendations for clear skin is to make sure you are washing your face and removing all your makeup both morning and night. Sometimes at night I find it hard to want to remove my makeup once I am all comfy in bed but this face wash makes it super simple to just wash it once and be done! It is very gentle and smells amazing while at the same time removing all my makeup for one simple step.
After washing my face I follow up with the Hope in a Jar moisturizer from Philosophy. This moisturizer smells fresh and clean and is the best one that I have found for my skin. I tend to have combination skin that can sometimes get oily throughout the day while at the same time can get dry pretty easily without the proper hydration. I find this moisturizer to be the perfect solution. I tend to use this mainly at night since I find it to be a little too thick to wear under makeup and it doesn’t contain the SPF I like to have for during the day. This moisturizer paired with the Purity face wash make for an unstoppable duo that have consistently kept my skin smooth and clear of blemishes.
Speaking of blemishes, something I keep on hand in case one of those little suckers pops up is the Tea Tree Oil from Trader Joes. I put some of the oil onto a q-tip and dap it on the blemish to try and spot treat the area. Tea tree oil has so many benefits but I find it to be amazing at clearing up/drying out skin impurities. Usually I will do this at night so that it has time to soak in and heal the affected area.
Last but not least the eye cream that I use is the 100% Pure Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream. I use a small amount of this under my eyes to help reduce puffiness and dark circles. This stuff smells amazing just like coffee with a mix of vanilla and makes my under eye area feel rejuvenated. Since I still am quiet young I do not really need the extra added stuff into an eye cream so I just use this at night as sort of a preventative. I love the consistency because it just melts right into my skin. For added de-puffing try sticking this in the fridge to get a nice cooling affect when you apply it.
One of my favorite things to do is paint but it is something that I often never get to do because I am too busy with school, homework, or work. It is so relaxing and is something I really enjoy doing. Another one of my favorite things to do is spend time with my boyfriend Dylan so I can’t think of better way to relax and spend time with someone you love. We decided to come up with some fun, unique, and relaxing date ideas for this summer since we will both be working and life can get kind of crazy. One of those ideas was to paint in the park but since it was such a nice and beautiful day out we decided to paint at a local beach that has a huge grassy area which overlooks the ocean. We aren’t the best painters in the world but it was so nice to just relax and paint anything we wanted while getting to just talk and laugh with each other. If you’re in need of a fun date idea this is definitely a go-to and requires little effort & money.
It’s finally here! Some of the yummy food that my mom and I ate on our 3 day trip up the coast to Santa Barbara, Pismo Beach, and San Luis Obispo.
First on the list is Sandbar and this restaurant is located on State Street in Santa Barbara, California. We enjoyed a nice late lunch here before heading back on the road to Pismo Beach. I ordered the taquitos, or rolled tacos, and my mom ordered two chicken soft tacos so that we could share. The food was very delicious and everything on the menu sounded amazing. If you’re ever in Santa Barbara and in need of some Mexican food stop by this restaurant and you won’t be disappointed.
Another restaurant we went to was called Novo and this was in downtown San Luis Obispo. The last image is a picture of the restaurant and as you can see it is on like a back outside patio that overlooks a little creek. My mom and I again ordered things to share starting with butternut squash soup. This soup was delicious and sweet while at the same time had a bit of a kick to it from the spices that were used. As our main dishes my mom ordered the “Singapore Chicken Satay” and I ordered the “Novo Lettuce Wraps”. These were on the appetizer part of the menu but were plenty of food. We couldn’t leave without trying a dessert so we ordered the “Winter Fruit Crisp” which had apples, pears, cranberries and ice cream along with a blood orange caramel sauce.
Since one dessert is never enough we also stopped at the SLO Donut Company on the way back to the hotel to get some yummy donuts. We ordered half a dozen and since it was later on in the night they didn’t have the best selection left however, the ones we did get were delicious. Starting from the top left we have a chocolate chip/hazelnut donut that was filled with chocolate filling, next was a nutella filled one, then a strawberry twist donut which was filled with strawberry jam, then we have just an old fashioned, and then finally two sprinkled cake donuts (chocolate/vanilla). The donuts were delicious and the place was very cute but I would recommend going there earlier on so that you have a better selection to choose from.
